Overview for HUD-mx1
HUD-mx1, aimed at the best quality of the same class, has completed after long developing and tuning work. HUD-mx1 is a high end USB DAC over technological limit by optimizing combination of digital and analog circuits based on our stable and ultra low noise PCB design technology, and by completing simple and luxurious outer case of which design has long developed, with basic components such as the USB2.0 compatible audio controller that supports 24bit/96kHz and the Wolfson's top D/A converter, WM8740(117dB) and with high quality components such as the OPAMP(LME49860, OPA2134, AD8397)/ condenser(OSCON, WIMA, SAMYOUNG's LowESR), a key sound component/ TCXO/ ALPS's volume. Also, you can enjoy HUD-mx1 only with connecting it to USB port in most computers regardless of an operating system. Both speaker and headphone are USB DAC products provding high fidelity audio sound.


24bit/96kHz High Quality Sound
The USB2.0 audio controller of HUD-mx1 helps play high quality sound recorded up to 24bit/96kHz without loss. And with its supports for 24bit/96kHz and dynamic range, 117dB, Wolfson’s high performance D/A converter converts digital data to analog to play sounds almost like its original sound.


High Performance Headphone Amp
For increasing, so called, Head-Fi users, a powerful and low-noisy headphone operable OPAMP, Analog Device’s AD8397, enables you to use devices ranging from a 16 ohm earphone and 32~300 ohm headphone with no additional device, up to 300~600 ohm high impedance headphone perfectly with jumpers(JP4, JP5) positioned inside a main body of the product.
A stereo phone having the same output level and two stereo mini-headphone terminals are provided for you to use an existing earphone or headphone jack without using a conversion gender, which may cause loss of sound.


Hi-Fi speaker output
The TI’s high performance OPAMP, OPA2134, and RCA jack are installed on Line-Out for connecting a high fidelity speaker in order for you to experience the highest fidelity.


National Semiconductor’s LME49860(High Fidelity Audio), having ultra low noise and distortion of THD+N 0.0003%, is set as default on the exchangeable socket of the Line-Out of the D/A converter which is a key component for high fidelity. AD8397(High Output Current) and OPA2134 (High Performance, Ultra Low Distortion) are each set on the headphone Line-Out and a speaker Line-Out in an SMD type that components are mounted on PCB.


High End Condenser and Stable Power Circuit Design
With a world famous WIMA’s high quality film condenser, an important component for sound quality, set on a coupling and filter, with condensers such as OSCON, LowESR, Tantalum, and so on, set on a D/A converter and main terminal of an OPAMP, and with six of high efficient Regular ICs used on each part of the product, power noise generation can be minimized, and stable and clear power supply is designed to be provided to main components.


Automatic Adapter Power ON/OFF
If your computer is turned on and the product is recognized as a USB audio device, adapter will be automatically turned on. On the other hand, if your computer is turned off, the adapter will be automatically turned off.


Speaker Protection Circuit
When output is switched from a headphone to a speaker, a circuit to protect a speaker temporarily stops high amplitude signals from being transmitted into a speaker during playback with high output.


High Quality Digital Output (S/PDIF type)
Optical terminal enables up to 24bit/96kHz bit perfect lossless PCM and AC3(Dolby Digital / DTS) Pass-Through digital data to be transmitted to an external device(receiver, decoder embedded 5.1 channel speaker and etc.) without loss.


Recording Computer Internal Sound
Computer internal sound can be recorded without loss by designing digital data of all the computer internal sound to loop-back on the circuit of the main body.

Identifying the Parts and Description ▼




① & ② Headphone-Out ( 6.3mm stereo phone / 3.5mm stereo mini )
They are an earphone or headphone connector, and the two connectors have the same output impedance. The use of conversion gender may cause sound deterioration, so a bundled jack is recommended to be used.


③ Output Selector Switch
Selects Headphone-Out or Line-Out. Headphone-Out is upside, and Line-Out is downside.


④ Indicator
LED is kept turned off although your computer is powered up, and the orange LED is turned on and changed into a standby mode when HUD-mx1 is recognized as a USB audio device. The orange LED is turned into light green during playback.


⑤ Volume Control
Controls volume level of Headphone-Out and Line-Out


※ By the nature of analog volume, Analog volume knob is recommended to be set at least 25% (9 o'clock) or higher. In case of use of low impedance (16~32 ohm) headphone or earphone, you are recommended to appropriately reduce the volume from maximum.










⑦ Digital-Out ( Optical-Out )
As a connector for optical fiber, Digital-Out supports for S/PDIF type PCM and AC3/DTS Passthrough, and connects a receiver, decoder, and so on.
※ AC3/DTS Passthrough is supported only in Vista (ServicePack 1) and Mac OS X.


⑧ USB Port
Connect to USB port of your computer using a bundled USB cable.


⑨ Power Connector
Power connector connects a power adapter of DC 12-15V.
For connection, connect a USB cable after an adapter is connected, and for disconnection, do it in reverse order.
Without an adapter, HUD-mx1 is operable only with a USB power supply in most computers, but may not be operable in a USB hub with unstable USB port power supply, 
some computers, or low voltage computers. 
※ Do not use an adapter that doesn’t have the same standard with a bundled adapter.


⑩ RCA Line-Out
An inti-amp, power amp, amp built-in speaker are connected to RCA Line-Out jack.
※ A passive speaker without a built in amp should be connected using an amp.








① Headphone-Out Gain Jumper ( JP4, JP5 )
Users of a high impedance, more than 300 ohm, headphone are recommended to put in jumpers(JP4, JP5), which are positioned inside the main body as default, and to use an adapter in order to use maximum output.






② Option Connector ( JP1, JP2, JP3 )
Option connector is an extra connector for Analog-In, an option board has not yet determined to provide.

Connecting the Hardware and Utilization in Mac OS X
No driver installation is required. HUD-mx1 will be automatically recognized as a USB AUDIO device shortly after it is USB-connected to your computer. Then you can enjoy HUD-mx1 shortly.
System Configuration → Sound, HUD-mx1 will be registered automatically.




More detailed input/output set-up can be done by using MIDI Set-Up as follows. 
Select External SPDIF Interface for recording computer internal sound.





Connecting the Hardware and Utilization in Windows XP
When HUD-mx1 is USB-connected to your computer, Windows basic USB AUDIO driver will be automatically installed, showing `New Hardware Detected` message. [Control Panel] – [Sound and Audio Device] – [Audio], Audinst HUD-mx1 will be registered automatically. Then you can enjoy HUD-mx1 shortly.


Output Volume Set-Up
Output volume is set at about 50% on Windows as default, and maximum volume is recommended for higher quality sound. But, in case of use of low impedance (16~32 ohm) headphone or earphone, appropriately reduced volume from maximum is recommended.





Windows Internal Sound Recording
Windows internal sounds can be recorded. Click the Volume icon on the system tray in the right side of the Windows task bar to call the Windows Recording Mixer, and then select S / PDIF Interface as follows.

Cautions when Exchanging OPAMP ▼


HUD-mx1 has LME49860 installed on an exchangeable socket of an output terminal of a D/A converter, which is the most important part for sound quality, so you can exchange OPAMP on your own sound taste.




You must disconnect the power adapter and USB cable from the rear of HUD-mx1 in order to exchange OPAMP before exchanging OPAMP. OPAMP should be installed by being aligned with the groove of the socket. OPAMP usable in HUD-mx1 is a stereo(Dual Type) / DIP type with operation voltage more than ±12V.
- For SMD  Type OPAMP,  convert SMD to DIP to use. 
- For Single Type OPAMP,  convert Single to Dual to use.


Caution : When exchanging OPAMP, you should be careful of direction of OPAMP. Specially, if you install OPAMP wrongly and there occurs damage to the product or a problem with functions, you cannot get free repair under warranty. So, please be careful of installation of OPAMP.

Warranty period is 2 years from the date of purchase.


• Receipt of the product tells the date of purchase, and if it is impossible to check the date of purchase from the receipt, the date of purchase is regarded as the same date with that of manufacture.


• Free repair would be accepted only in case of breakdowns during normal use of the product under warranty. Even if the product is under warranty, repair for the product would be charged when the product is damaged by natural disasters(lighting, fire, immersion, and so on), is modified, and is damaged and broken down by user’s careless behaviors and faults.
